JE SMITH MEETS STAN THE MAN!
Who says having a day job doesn't pay off? One of the perks of my position at Heritage Comics (the world's largest auctioneer of comics, original art,
and collectibles) is getting to meet legends like STAN "THE MAN" LEE! The ever-lovin' co-creator of SPIDER-MAN, X-MEN, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and more welcomed us into his Santa Monica offices last month and was kind enuff to pose for this pic! Stan also mugged with his favorite Web-Slinger (below).
What a guy!

JE SMITH MEETS COLLEEN DORAN

While attending this year's Chicago WizardWorld convention, I had the opportunity to meet one of my favorite artists, namely the lovely and talented COLLEEN DORAN,colleen1.gif (130631 bytes) author of the long-running A DISTANT SOIL series. In this picture I am clearly overcome with emotion to be meeting the engaging Ms. Doran. I bought some original art and got Colleen to sign several of my books, and generally tried not to act like a gibbering fanboy. It was tough. Luckily, Colleen was the soul of sweetness, and treated me kindly, even if she may have been looking around for security. Keep an eye out for an extensive photo-essay on this year's Chicago con, which I will try to post in the next week or so, and click HERE to see pictures from the latest DALLAS COMIC AND TOY FEST.

YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!

COMPLEX CITY: BULLDOG MALONE is COMING!

To herald the upcoming COMPLEX CITY trade paperback, I will be publishing a one-shot comic called COMPLEX CITY: BULLDOG MALONE, a self-contained issue featuring an exciting adventure set roughly six months before the events of COMPLEX CITY #1. In CC:BM, Bulldog hits the streets when a tipster informs the CCPD that a shipment of EON -- the most dangerous illicit substance on Earth -- has hit Complex City. Bulldog must cut a path through the darkest corners of his beloved city to find the mastermind behind this evil scheme.

COMPLEX CITY: BULLDOG MALONE is a 24-page one-shot in standard comic format, and includes a spectacular cover penciled by indie legend RICHARD DOMINGUEZ (EL GATO NEGRO), with inks by yours truly, and colors by Mark Stokes. It will be solicited in the October issue of PREVIEWS and ship to comic book stores in early December, 2002. Don't miss out on this exciting issue, the first new COMPLEX CITY material to hit the market in over a year! This issue will NOT be reprinted in the upcoming trade paperback, so don't miss your chance to check out Bulldog Malone's latest adventure.

Following quickly on the heels of CC:BM, our first trade paperback collection, COMPLEX CITY: ALL IN A DAY'S WORK will be solicited in the December issue of PREVIEWS, and will ship in early February (and we may even debut it at the annual APE con in San Francisco -- more info as we get it).

The trade will be 128 pages, will reprint COMPLEX CITY #1, #2, and #4, and will feature over thirty pages of previously unpublished material, concluding the Crazy Quilt storyline begun in issue #4. We also have a spectacular line-up of artists lending their talents to a 10-page Bulldog Malone pin-up gallery;  the names include Michael Lark, Dean Haspiel, Scott Kurtz, Dave Hahn, Jim Daly, Sam Hurt, Richard Dominguez, John Lucas, Mark Stokes, and More!I

The trade will feature an ALL-NEW full-color cover by yours truly. Keep your eyes HERE for more info as it becomes available!!

THE EYE COLLECTION IS NOW IN PREVIEWS!

Bill Schelly's THE EYE COLLECTION is solicited in the current (April, 2002)
issue of PREVIEWS. THE EYE is a character that was created for '60s comic
fandom by the legendary Biljo White (based on some design sketches by the equally legendary Grass Green), who starred in various original strips in several '60s fanzines. A few years ago, fandom historian Bill Schelly (THE GOLDEN AGE OF COMIC FANDOM) bought the rights to the "Ocular Operative," and has since created two self-published comics featuring the character (THE EYE and HEROES VS. HITLER). THE EYE COLLECTION reprints these two recent tales, plus a classic fandom tale by Biljo White, a completely revamped origin
story written by Schelly with art by RON FRENZ and JOSEF RUBENSTEIN, and an
all-new tale scripted by Schelly and drawn by yours truly, JE Smith. The book also featured contributions from Roy Thomas, Dick Giordano, and Michael T. Gilbert.

I have long been an admirer of Biljo White, and love the Eye character, so I was thrilled when Bill asked me to participate by penciling and inking this 10-page story. It was a bit intimidating, trying to keep the spirit of Biljo in my artwork, but ultimately it was a fun and rewarding gig. And hey -- I
even got paid for it.

The trade paperback is 144 pages for $13.95, and is listed on page 290 under
the banner of HAMSTER PRESS. Please ask you retailer to order HUNDREDS of
copies. You'll not only be supporting a worthy small press publisher, but a
very cool character as well. Order today
!

Preview pages of Complex City issue 1, 2, and 3 are now online and are accessible through the navigation menu.

JES_stanlee.jpg (31427 bytes)"The toughest thing a writer/artist can do is come with a concept that's excitingly new and original. Well, Jolly JE Smith has done just that with his off-the-wall Complex City. There's never been a hero like his unflappable Bulldog Malone, or characters like Fidge Dextro and Max of Two Minds. I salute Jeff's brilliantly twisted imagination and thank him for giving us one of the cleverest, not-to-be-missed comics in years!"

RICHARD DOMINGUEZ ON BULLDOG MALONE

Well, the store signing at Lone Star Comics this past weekend wasn't spectacularly well-attended, but that didn't stop the cadre of cartoonists from having a great time shooting the breeze and talking shop. In fact, EL GATO NEGRO creator Richard Dominguez was so bored he did not one but two pin-ups of our very own Bulldog Malone, shown below. The head-shot will show up in the trade paperback, and the cookout sketch (featuring Bulldog's cutie-pie spouse, Ginger Malone) will be featured in a BULLETPROOF trade paperback which I hope to do in '03. Also look for more of Richard's art in a very special COMPLEX CITY project that I will be announcing within the week!PINUP_dominguez.gif (160990 bytes)

MORE JUSTICE SOCIETY ART!

The Justice Society artwork I did that was up for auction at www.HeritageComics.com last month performed so well that I've posted another one!  Part two in a series depicting the original eight members of the JSA, this one features the two Doctors, Fate and Mid-Nite. You can bid on the artwork by following the link at:

SUPER-LAST-MINUTE CON APPEARANCE!

That's right, at the very last minute, my good buddy Mark Walters has invited me to appear alongside him and PVP Guru SCOTT KURTZ (www.pvponline.com) at the upcoming SciFi Expo Fan Appreciation Day. It happens this Sunday, April 14th from 10am - 5pm, and admission is absolutely FREE!! Come on out to the Plano Convention Center and say hello. For more info check their website at http://www.scifiexpo.com/nextshow.htm

JE SMITH GOLDEN AGE/JUSTICE SOCIETY ARTWORK UP FOR AUCTION!

If you're a fan of the Golden Age Justice Society characters, check out a piece of artwork I did depicting the Golden Age Flash and Green Lantern that is up for auction at the Heritage Comics website. Click HERE to see the auction. You'll have to join the Heritage website to bid, but it's free and only takes a few minutes. This is a very large piece, 14" x 17", and I think it came out pretty nicely. I am planning to do four separate pieces with two characters each that will add up to the original eight members of the Justice Society. I get most of the money generated by this auction, so if you like my artwork, feel free to bid!

"THE EYE" PREVIEW

I have just completed work on an 11-page story for Bill Schelly's forthcoming THE EYE BOOK trade paperback, and Bill has generously granted me permission to put up a 3-page preview of the story. The Eye was created for '60s comic fandom by Biljo White (working from a character design by Grass Green), and appeared in many fanzines of the day, including STAR-STUDDED COMICS, FIGHTING HERO COMICS, and several EYE books published by Biljo himself. In recent years, Bill Schelly has acquired the rights to the character, and featured him in a one-shot comic of his own, and in the team-up book HEROES VS. HITLER. The EYE trade paperback will include reprints of some classic Biljo White strips, the two recent Bill Schelly comics, and two original stories, one of which is previewed here. The other story is a revamped "Origin" of the Eye. No publication date has been announced yet, but it will probably appear in late 2001 or early 2002

Should be an impressive and fun book! These scans are a little raggedy, but should give you a good idea of the story.
